Kinja'd!!!

What you see above is a Michelin Pilot Super Sport that was once attached to my Civic Si. It was also, at some point, in one piece.

Two weeks before I was going to put on my winter tires (one of the benefits in working for an indie garage — free tire storage and swaps), while driving through a construction zone, I sprung a leak in my tire thanks to an errant bit of shrapnel. A short distance later, the cabin was filled with a bassy note and my steering wheel began to vibrate. I looked into my side-view mirror just in time to see handfuls of black rubber spit from underneath the car.

I pulled over. Fuck.

My TPMS system hadn't been active since I accidentally broke one of the sensors trying to swap my winter tires myself. So I only knew about the tire once it had exploded. I threw the tire in my trunk and, equipped with a donut, limped my ass to work on side roads. I guess I'll just swap to winters a little early, I said to myself.

One week later, I finally ascended to the peak of Bullshit Mountain.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

What a fucking joke .

This time, I was doing about 85 in the left lane of I-294 when the shudder and the bass returned. Thankfully, I was still in a state of hypervigilance, given the ersatz PTSD that came from my first tread separation. I pulled to the left shoulder and assessed the situation. It was my right rear tire — the same corner that had a donut on it just a week prior. It was also the side facing traffic, traffic that was moving at 85 mph.

So I got back in the car, waited for the largest gap I could find, and praying that I'd gauged everything correctly, dropped the clutch and took off for the right shoulder. The wheel was shaking, and I felt the tire getting ready to separate from the tread completely, but I wasn't about to change a tire with my back only three inches from the fastest traffic in the Chicagoland area.

This time around, I cheaped out and waited a while to replace the tire. You know how the donut says to not go over 50, and to drive immediately to a garage? It's all lies. I checked the quality daily; it will hold up for hundreds of miles at standard speeds.

(That said, take a page from The 10 Dos and 500 Don'ts of Knife Safety , and don't do what Donny Don't does.)

A few weeks later, I broke my left rear wheel.

Kinja'd!!!

This was my own dumb fault, though. I held the e-brake for just a second too long on a snowy curve, and I made contact with what I'd hoped was a softly-sloped curb. Nope, it was a 90-degree motherfucker, and it motherfucked me good. The bead held like that for the one-mile drive home, and, after putting the donut back on, I bought a new wheel posthaste.

A year or so later, this past winter, changing jobs in the interim, I was headed to Detroit from Chicago to cover NAIAS. I was driving a brand-new Kia Cadenza press loaner.

Kinja'd!!!

I was on the feeder ramp from the Skyway to I-94 E, which was still covered in snow, and so I was following the ruts around. Right inside that rut was a pothole the size of a pizza box, which I didn't see, but I sure as shit felt. The dashboard lit up like Fremont Street, and so I pulled over to swap the tire.

Of course, the front tire blew, so I had to swap the donut onto the rear, then the still-intact rear onto the front. I had about three feet of usable shoulder at the end of the feeder ramp, and so half the car was sticking out into the lane. A quick ring to the State Police solved that problem, and with the five-o blocking the lane, I changed the tires and went on my way.

Once again, the donut proved to have serious mettle, taking me all the way to Detroit without issue.

A few weeks ago, I had a Panamera 4S press loaner, and its right rear tire sprung a soft leak.

I have shit luck with tires.

It's not you, it's the roads around Chicago that are just fucked. I was almost swallowed by a pothole coming from a concert at the Allstate arena a month ago. And the onramps by my house are like driving on Mars. Meanwhile, the city tears up roads that don't really need to be fixed and not fix all the shit that does. I'm moving to Germany.

Dude holy shit that's absolutely insane stuff. I'm really worried after reading this. My dad and I realized that after we got rid of the wheel lock lugnuts on my wheels we accidentally replaced them with a different size lugnut and now I don't have a suitable socket in the car to remove that one nut in the event of a tire failure. And now I have a 75 minute commute to work all summer and I keep seeing people changing tires on that commute. Someday I'm gonna remember to grab the socket...

Aren't they? The tires outperformed the car, and given how many idiot drivers I encounter, I like the security that comes with all that grip.

Best $600 I've ever put into my car. It's a shame they only lasted one season. I moved to Continental DWs after that. I needed a higher treadwear rating.

Oh hey! After I got a bolt in a winter tire, I decided it was time to just put my summers back on (around April).

Drove up around Westchester County, hit an unavoidable pothole at 15mph (either chance a tire or hit a car head on) and carried on a couple of miles onto the NY Thruway. Now, I usually love the smell of burning rubber, but all of a sudden smelling it at /the speed limit/ and seeing blue smoke coming out of the right rear of the car isn't my idea of fun!

I pop on my hazards, pull over and get out, look in the trunk - great, I remembered to put my jack, spare tire, breaker bar and adapter, so I get it out on the grass verge with cars shooting past feet away, and try to slide my jack under the car. Doesn't fit. Damn. The car is hard enough to get a jack under normally, let alone when every bit of height counts! I jump over the barrier next to the road and call my roadside assistance. As we're talking, a HELP truck pulls up. His little pneumatic jack fits, and he zips my space saver on for me in no time.

Kinja'd!!!

I have a feeling my tire had a few hundred more feet until it tore in two like yours, but damn, that was annoying. Thanks NY roads!

Have you considered downsizing to a smaller wheel diameter, like a 16" or something? That'd give you a larger sidewall.

Kinja'd!!! Earthbound And Down > My X-type is too a real Jaguar
06/19/2014 at 13:44

Kinja'd!!!0

The first two separations were due to picking up small shards of metal scattered on the road. They fully penetrated the tread and let out air fast enough to where it lost sufficient pressure before I could even feel a change. The Kia's was due to a pothole hidden under packed snow on a wintry feeder ramp, and I was going slower than the ramp's suggested speed.

L2Rbro. Aggression was not a factor. Except for the broken wheel. That was all me.

I can feel your pain. In my 14 years of driving I have had mound of shit upon shit luck for tires. It's all the low pros fault. I had a '96 Prelude that I had saved up years for and purchased when I was 17, had 17in Pirelli's that lasted about 4 mos, total dogshit. Then I went through my fair share of BF Goodrich, total dogshit. Then I got rid of the prelude many years later and had a Yukon with nice big tires, never had a single problem. Then for gas prices sake I got rid of the Yukon and got an Acura TL and back to the low pros and back to the tire problems. I've thankfully (as i'm punching a piece of wood right now) haven't had too many problems with my 17in Michelin's, but their time will come. TPMS is a great little piece of technology and has saved my ass so many times and I event count.

In my opinion, your Super Sports should have been retired a long time ago, the tire looks pretty damn bald. As for the winter tires, I'm not sure what the speed rating was but 85 might have been a little close to the limit. I'm wondering if the winter tires were just plain old. I'm glad your safe and didn't cause any accidents. If I were you, I would definitely buy the tire protection certificates. Maybe you should buy some new wheels while you're at it too.

So...... not for nothing, but are you only swapping *tires* for the winter? Doesn't that put additional strain on them by stretching them out each time? Why not just get a second set of rims (cheapest ones you can get tirerack that will fit your car) and go with a smaller rim/taller sidewall for snow tires? The benefit is that they're cheaper (for the snow tires) too.

Stuff happens when you're behind the wheel a significant amount of time. That said, for the majority of your stories:

1. Broke and didn't replace TPMS resulting in two shredded tires that may have just been quick repairs if it had been working. (Also, are those bald? They look bald in the picture.)

2. Driving around on a donut like it was a regular tire, professing it a success because nothing happened this time .

3. E-brake stunts in the snow result in busted wheel.

What part of these three incidents has to do with luck? They all seem to be the result of not taking proper care of your shit.

/said with peace and love.

It was absolute overkill. But, back then, I'd made plans to completely overhaul the suspension and other chassis components and make the car significantly more aggressive. The rubber would have fit in perfectly with the ideas I had.

Then I didn't follow through with them, so I was left with a stock Si on Super Sports.

I'm on DWs now. A far more sensible choice, with like 3x the treadwear rating.

The Blizzak WS-70s are rated for 100+. I know better than to exceed the speed rating of a given tire.*

*Still did it on the donut, though.

"drop the clutch" on a flat tire. i'm SOOOOO sure this is all due to luck.

At least tire prices down there are almost HALF of what they are in Canada...

I will say that Discount Tire's road hazard warrenty has saved me some money over what I put into the warranty. If I lived where the roads really suck (including lots of construction areas with nails and shrapnel), and had low profile tires, it might pay off to warranty those. Hope that luck does a bootlegger turn for you asap!

Did you say you were driving your IKEA Credenza? Now there is your problem.....

Seriously though. I had horrible luck with tires myself this winter, bulged one and cut a hole in the sidewall on the other.

That's why I stick with 16"s on my e36. Not dealing with the harsh ride and increased chance of damage going any larger.

Did you actually lose a differential in your Si? Seeing as its a helical type, running consistently distinct wheel speeds shouldn't fry it in the manner that clutch-type and viscous LSDs perish.

I had them on my '07 335i that was putting out about 390hp at the rear wheels and they lasted 3 summers. That included two track days and a lot of right pedal on back roads. I sold the car with them and they looked like they could have made it another year. That was even with staggered wheels so I couldn't rotate.

Yes, it appears you have shit luck with tires. Did you piss off the rubber gods in you past life? Burn any rubber trees?

This past winter was brutal on my DD Accord (now sold). I went through 3 bent rims in the span of 2 months. 2 of them were aftermarket and 1 being the spare donut itself. When the spare went out I walked/commuted 10 blocks to the nearest tires shop and bought a steelie with a decent used tire as a spare.

The potholes I hit were always at night especially when the road was wet. They are so much harder to spot and avoid in the dark.

You're having shit luck because your sidewall size is fuck-all. For DD and even track day usage i'd go no smaller then a 40 profile sidewall. I have 35 profile rears with my stock tires on the SS Sedan but once those are done i'm moving up to at least a 40.

Also, check out Goodyear's Eagle Asymmetric 2. While they don't perform quite as well in the dry as the Super Sports they are significantly cheaper while offering better wet performance. They also have the same treadwear rating and come with beefy curb guards.

while the kia seems like bad luck, it seems like you need a bit more sidewall in ORD.

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail http://www.jobs700.com

The right-rear tire is most common to get leaks. Most of the shit in the road goes off to the right side gutter and when you make right turns you go through the right side gutter.

That doesn't mean you don't have shitty luck — you do — just that you were most likely to have shitty luck with the right rear tire.

No, I never had such an 'opportunity'. I just read the owner's manual closely enough to spot the "put donut on back ONLY" clause, and it said something about why. I remember it specifically stated that it was because it had an LSD.
